NORTH BARRINGTON, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- You likely know his name by now, and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office’s canine superstar is getting more praise after a successful bust Sunday night.
Lt. Christopher Covelli said deputies were called to North Barrington for reports of a stolen vehicle driving unusually slow.
“The vehicle was occupied at that time by only one person,” he said. “But that person was not the driver of the vehicle. The driver had fled on foot.”
That’s when canine Dax was called into action, eventually tracking the suspect about a quarter mile into a nearby wooded area.
“Dax moved in and ended up apprehending the individual with a bite to the buttocks. He was subsequently arrested," Covelli said.
Heriberto Chavez-Cervantes, 24, of West Chicago, is now charged with resisting a peace officer and possession of a stolen vehicle.
“Our canines, we’re very proud of them,” Covelli said. “We’re very lucky to have them at the sheriff’s office.”
Chavez-Cervaantes was transported to the Lake County Jail where he was ordered held on a $50,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court again on July 21.
