CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Lake County governments will soon be receiving more than $160 million in federal COVID-19 relief money to help people who have been hard-hit by the pandemic.
According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury. over $135 million will go to Lake County, $19.7 million to Waukegan, and $6.2 million to North Chicago, as part of the American Rescue Plan.
Lake County Board Chair Sandy Hart told the Lake News-Sun the board is already looking at how to best use the money to help people who were most severely impacted by the pandemic. That’s what was done last year when CARES Act money was received.
Lake County Board finance chair Paul Frank said there are businesses that need help, as well as people who need help with food and housing assistance.
North Chicago Mayor Leon Rockingham said the money is going to help in an "impactful way."
Waukegan Mayor Ann Taylor said the money "will go a long way to helping our finances," and while they are still determining how to spend it, it will make a "big difference."
