CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — More than a dozen members of the Chicago City Council have called on the state and city to take their foot off the gas regarding plans to redesign a portion of DuSable Lake Shore Drive.

In a letter addressed to the heads of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), 14 alders argued that any redesign of DuSable Lake Shore Drive should be less automobile-centric — and more public transit-oriented.

For years, IDOT and CDOT officials have been looking at ways to change how the drive looks and operates between Grand and Hollywood Avenues.

The group of 14 alderpersons said modern, reliable mass transit is superior to cars at moving people, and they added that prioritizing mass transit is the only means of sustainably addressing congestion.

A redesigned DuSable Lake Shore Drive without a mass transit element would be a non-starter, they said. The alders would like officials to meet with them about their concerns.

IDOT officials said they, along with CDOT and the Chicago Park District, have been looking forward to working with everyone to develop the project’s goals and alternatives.
