SPRINGFIELD (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Tenants would have new protections under legislation that has cleared the house and senate and awaits action by Governor J.B. Pritzker.
The Landlord Retaliation Act would prohibit a landlord from terminating a lease or increasing rent, among other things, if a tenant seeks assistance to make their housing safe or habitable.
That would include making requests for repairs, making complaints about code violations or organizing or joining a tenant’s union.
State Senator Karina Villa, a Democrat from West Chicago, is the sponsor of the bill and said she’s heard from constituents who have faced retaliation.
“These individuals are looking for quality, safe and affordable housing and should not be barred from seeking remedies without fear of retaliation,” Villa said.
Some Republican lawmakers think this is a bad bill, so does the Illinois Rental Property Owners Association.
