CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - There will be classes today at Lane Tech High School after the finding of a hazardous material at the school Thursday evening.

The principal of Lane Tech High School sent a letter to parents and students Thursday night, indicating a small quantity of mercury had been discovered in one of the school’s bathrooms.

The editor of the school’s newspaper, Alex Burnstein, posted a story with a picture of mercury in a toilet at the school.

The school was evacuated after the mercury was found, and that included postponing the rest of a girls’ basketball game at halftime.

The principal’s letter said a hazardous materials response team checked the rest of the school and cleared it for use, so classes are on for today.

There’s been no indication what the source of the mercury was.
