CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A state representative from the southwest suburbs has introduced a measure to reward vaccinated adults with a free beer.
Democrat Michael Zalewski’s proposal, filed Tuesday, comes as officials across the U.S. are thinking of ways to encourage the vaccine-reluctant to get their shots.
Demand for vaccines has plunged in recent days, which could interfere with establishing herd immunity from COVID-19.
The so-called “Shot and a Beer” bill would allow bars and restaurants to temporarily offer the incentive of one free beer to someone 21 or older who shows proof of vaccination.
“Under Illinois law, you’re only allowed to do free beer or free drinks under very specific circumstances,” Zalewski told WCIA-TV.
The promotional program would not involve state funds.
New Jersey, Connecticut and Washington D.C. have implemented a similar incentive.
