(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A 2-year-old child is safe Thursday after a carjacker knocked his mother to the ground and stole the vehicle in which he was a passenger, Lake County police said.

The boy’s 34-year-old mother had pulled into her driveway in unincorporated Libertyville around 3:30 p.m. and brought one of her children inside. Before she could retrieve the 2-year-old, a white BMW pulled up behind her Volkswagen Atlas, the sheriff’s department said.

A suspect wearing a face mask exited the passenger side of the BMW and struggled to get into the victim’s SUV. He knocked the woman down and stole the vehicle with the boy still inside.

As the two vehicles fled, one of the drivers ran over the mother, causing serious injuries to her extremities. The victim was still able to call 9-1-1, prompting a response from sheriff’s deputies.

Moments later, a worker at a business in Waukegan saw the carjackers drop the child in a parking lot and called police.  The woman's SUV was later found along Route 43.

The woman is in the hospital, where authorities say her condition has been stabilized.

Authorities continue searching for the BMW, which was stolen from a Waukegan dealership. Anyone with information is asked to call the Lake County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division at 847-377-4000 or contact Lake County CrimeStoppers at www.lakecountycrimestoppers.org.
