After complaints and delays, Illinois driver’s license facilities in the suburbs have started scheduling online appointments.

Previously, the Secretary of State’s Office had allowed motorists to make appointments, in person, for which they would have to return later.

The more convenient option of scheduling the appointment online was available at 10 driver’s services locations as of Wednesday.

By week’s end, that may increase to 14 sites, including Lake Zurich, Waukegan, Woodstock, Elgin, Aurora, Naperville, Des Plaines, Joliet, Schaumburg, Lombard, Deerfield, Melrose Park, Plano and Bridgeview.

Chicago sites aren’t expected to offer the option until late April, Secretary of State spokesperson Henry Haupt said.

Reminder: Only certain types of drivers — basically, new ones, getting their first permits or licenses — need to come to a driver’s license facility.

The Secretary of State’s Office has extended expired licenses to June 1, and some transactions, such as renewing license plates, can be done online.
