CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A lifeguard at the Naval Station Great Lakes is being commended for saving the life of a seaman at the training center.
The lifeguard is Sophia Antrim, a 22-year-old native of Oregon, and the incident occurred two weeks ago at an indoor pool.
She told officials at Great Lakes that she noticed the man in the pool and saw that he was not a strong swimmer. She reminded him to stay in the shallow end of the pool, but officials say the man ended up in the deep end and started drowning when he couldn’t stand up.
Antrim pulled him out.
She told officials at Great Lakes that this rescue wasn’t as jarring as some but said the feeling of adrenaline is still pretty strong.
Her favorite part of being a lifeguard at Great Lakes is giving swimming lessons.
The Navy says lifeguards often go on to careers in fire departments and as emergency medical technicians.
