CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Lori Lightfoot is expressing some impatience with how the Chicago Public Schools have been handling efforts to control COVID-19 and with the Chicago Teachers Union.

CPS reported some 500 cases of COVID-19 in the schools, and parents and the CTU are calling for more testing and contact tracing. Lightfoot said she’s asked City Health Director Dr. Allison Arwady to get directly involved with CPS to — in her words— “right the ship.”

CTU president Jesse Sharkey said there are some 10,000 CPS students on quarantine now.

Whether that’s true or not, Lightfoot was clear she’s not happy with school officials’ protocols. She said Arwady will make sure there are no "mass quarantines."

"That's not a thing," she said.

Sharkey has been critical of the Mayor and CPS, but Lightfoot blames the union.

The CTU still doesn’t have a safety agreement with the CPS, even with school underway. And the mayor blames CTU leadership for — she says — not coming to the bargaining table.

She said standing on the sidelines and lobbing bombs at news conferences doesn't get it done.
