(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Lightfoot says a memo she sent to the staff member who did her scheduling — a memo some have characterized as bullying — was “born of frustration.”
Lightfoot sent the communication — released under a Freedom of Information Act request — to a staff member in late January, upset that she hadn’t been given enough office time.
The Chicago Tribune has compared it to Jack Nicholson’s character in The Shining, Stanley Kubrick's 1980 film adaptation of the Stephen King horror tale. He is supposed to be writing a novel, but in reality he is only typing “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” over and over and over and over.
The mayor’s memo repeats the same phrases again and again and again. For example, she types “I need office time everyday!” 16 times.
Mayor Lightfoot was asked about the memo at a news conference Monday.
“To write an email like that comes after a lot of conversation and born of frustration. We got beyond that and solved the challenges that were at the heart of that email, which was written five-plus months ago. So, I think we’re in a better place.”
The Tribune reports the staff member left the mayor’s office for another job.
