CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lightfoot seemed stunned by the shooting of a toddler on Lake Shore Drive in an apparent road rage incident.
Mayor Lightfoot said it’s tragic when anyone is shot in Chicago, and most especially when it is a child. But, she said, she is constantly amazed by how many people have guns, brandish them, and use them as brazenly as many do.
"It particularly grieves me when we see people using firearms when there are children in close proximity," she said. "As I understand, this small child was in a carseat in the back of a car and they were shooting from that car and coming to that car. That does not make any sense to me."
The mayor doesn’t shy away from her long-standing belief that lax gun laws than other states make guns, in her view, easier to by than alcohol. And she said universal background checks are vital in keeping such weapons out of the hand of those who should never have them.
"We have got to do a better job as a nation protecting our young people, our elders against gun violence, and it has to start, in my opinion, with universal background checks. It also has to start with making sure people who should never possess a handgun don't ever get one," Lightfoot said.
She said too many people have guns and use them like this and while she respects the second amendment and the rights of law-abiding gun owners, some laws need to be strengthened.
