(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — With ex-police officer Jason Van Dyke set to be released early for the murder of teenager Laquan McDonald, Chicago Mayor Lightfoot urges people to remember how much has changed since he fired those fatal 16 shots.
Lightfoot said Monday she’s among critics who feel Van Dyke hasn’t spent enough time in prison for killing McDonald in 2014. But she said people shouldn’t lose sight that he was the first police officer convicted of an on-duty murder in 50 years.
She said Van Dyke’s crime also was the catalyst for several police reforms.
Van Dyke was convicted of second-degree murder and aggravated battery in 2018 and sentenced to 81 months in prison. He’s expected to be released this week.
