(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Lori Lightfoot is scoffing at the special City Council meeting several aldermen have called for Wednesday, which is aimed at limiting the city’s vaccine mandate for city workers.

Eleven alderman called the gathering to consider changing policies requiring municipal employees to be vaccinated. Employees, including police officers and firefighters, who weren’t vaccinated by last Sunday run the risk of being terminated.

Lightfoot, who has dug in over the policy, said she will not preside over the afternoon meeting. She said she has long-standing plans to travel to Florida, so she’ll be out of town.

“They’re going to do whatever they’re going to do tomorrow, but I’m not going to continue to be involved in political charades and stunts. I’m just not. We have too many serious things that we have to address,” she said.

Some aldermen want police officers who have resisted getting vaccinated to be able to say natural immunity is sufficient.
