CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Millions of birds are working overtime this Labor Day weekend as they head south for the winter. Here's how you can help them get there.
Nearly 100,000 birds will fly over Chicago this Labor Day weekend as they head south for the winter. But the city can be dangerous for birds.
Chicago has been labeled one of the most hazardous cities for birds because it's the largest urban area along a major migratory route. Birds can collide with tall buildings, and lights distract birds and lead them off course.
WTTW reported that the peak days of fall migration are happening over Chicago, so a "lights out" alert has been issued for the city.
The Cornell Lab of Ornithology and its partners encourage building owners and residents to turn off as many lights as possible between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. More than 30 million birds will pass through Illinois before Labor Day.
