'We want to give the family justice': Little Village community seeks answers related to shooting death of Guatemalan immigrant

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Residents in Little Village say they're seeking justice for a community member who was shot and killed last week.

"It's very frustrating when you have an individual who has no enemies, no gang affiliation, and gets killed," said Baltazar Enriquez.

He is with Little Village Community Council and said the community is demanding answers from Chicago Police about the shooting of a 29- year- old man in the area last week.

"We want to give the family justice. We want to give also our residents in Little Village justice and give them some peace."

Enriquez said the man was a Guatemalan immigrant, and that his death adds to the countless deaths of other immigrants in the area that have gone "ignored" by Chicago Police.

"The homicide department does not investigate properly in our neighborhood," he added. "They don't go door knocking, talking to neighbors, looking at cameras from neighbors. They do not do a proper investigation like they should."

He said this makes it hard for residents, many who are immigrants, to feel safe.

"We want them to tell other Guatemalans, 'hey Little Village is one of the places where you want to come when you come to Chicago. You want to live here, you want to be part of Little Village."

Enriquez also said they've tried contacting the Office of Emergency Management and Communications, with no success.

In a statement to WBBM, the Chicago Police department said: "The Chicago Police Department investigates all cases thoroughly as we work to bring justice to all victims and communities affected by the trauma of violence. We will continue to investigate open cases and hold accountable the individuals responsible."

The shooting death of the man remains an active investigation.
