(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – In Little Village, victimized street vendors are demanding a stronger police presence and improved police response times.

At about 4 1/2 feet tall, resident Mercedes Alvarez says she wakes up at 3 a.m. every morning, making the rounds to check on the area's street vendors.

She does this alone or with one other person. Avarez said this is a job for police but they aren't doing it.

Speaking alongside her near the Little Village arch on 26th street, vendors told their stories of becoming recent victims of violent crime.

With 25th Ward Ald. Byron-Sigcho Lopez, they signed a letter to Mayor Lori Lightfoot demanding that more policing resources be allocated to Latino communities.
