(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Eliminating HIV has long been a dream. Now researchers say they're moving closer to making it an achievable goal with the help of local pharmacists.

Brad McElya is Director of Specialty Health Solutions at Deerfield-based Walgreen's. He said the recently-announced U.S. Business Action to End HIV is committed to accelerating progress to end AIDS by 2030, and said AIDS cannot be allowed to slip out of the public consciousness.

"One of the things that we've seen recently throughout the pandemic as well as over the last couple of years within the epidemic-the HIV epidemic, is the critical need for our pharmacists to help to address ill health inequities."

One recent innovation in the battle against HIV is Pre-exposure prophylaxis, also known as "Prep" which helps to prevent HIV infection for those who do not have it, and, hopefully, will eventually be available at Illinois pharmacies.
