(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Loyola University plans to award Areanah Preston’s master’s degree posthumously to her family after the Chicago police officer was killed last Saturday.

Preston was supposed to graduate this weekend from Loyola University’s Law School.

Sara Block had Areanah Preston in two of her children’s law and policy classes and describes her former student as a leader who was very engaging.

She said Preston had great empathy for kids caught in the justice system and truly wanted to make the world a better place.

Preston wanted to eventually work for the FBI in sex trafficking cases, she said.

The university is gathering stories and thoughts from Preston's classmates to share with her family at a later date.
