CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A man brought to Chicago to face charges for a north suburban murder has died before he could face trial.
The Cook County Sheriff’s office said 73-year old Richard Sisto, who died a week ago, was extradited to Illinois from Texas in late November. Sisto spent the majority of the next two months being treated at Stroger Hospital for an undisclosed reason, according to the sheriff’s office.
Sisto had been charged with the strangulation murder of 35-year old Helen Cardwell in her room in the Leaning Tower YMCA in Niles in 1992.
Police said after Sisto’s DNA was entered into a nationwide database last year after he was convicted of sexual assault in Texas, it turned up a match to evidence from the Niles crime scene.
