GARY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Gary firefighters rescued residents of a burning apartment building last night, but they couldn’t get to one man in time.
Firefighters responded to a three story building on Ridge Road near Virginia just after 9 p.m.
There are businesses on the ground floor and ten apartments on the second and third floors. There was fire on both upper floors.
Fire Chief Sean O’Donnell said firefighters used ladders to rescue two residents from the second floor balcony.
They searched the apartments and found a man dead in one unit.
The Chief said the fire is currently under investigation by the fire department and state fire marshal's office.
