CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --Increasing violent incidents on the CTA, including a murder overnight, have prompted an increase in security and more police officers.

A man was shot to death early Saturday on the Red Line on the South Side.

About 2:05 a.m., the 29-year-old was on a Red Line train car in the 100 block of West 79th Street when a person opened gunfire, Chicago police said.

The man was struck in the chest and abdomen. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he died, police said.

Police aren’t giving numbers about newly assigned officers to combat violence on the CTA. Superintendent David Brown only said it’s “significant" during a press conference.

"We are collaborating with CTA to enhance safety for our riders and we know the CTA is vital."

CTA President Dorval Carter also spoke about plans in collaboration with the CPD.

"We are going to be bringing back the canine security guard teams to the CTA as another way to expand our presence and our security presence on both our trains and in our stations."

No arrests were made in connection with the fatal shooting, but area detectives are investigating.
