LAPORTE COUNTY, IND. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Police in Northwest Indiana are investigating thefts at cemeteries.
A notice from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office does not mince words, saying they need to “draw your attention to a series of disgusting and offensive thefts.”
The sheriff’s office says within the past week several bronze markers, located on headstones of deceased veterans in the Union Mills and Rolling Prairie Cemeteries, have been stolen.
The stolen markers are those that are affixed to the back of the headstone.
Investigators say family members of deceased veterans with similar bronze markers might want to visit the gravesite to make sure there has been no tampering or theft.
Detectives are also contacting area scrap yards to make them aware of the missing markers and the investigation.
