After Sunday's loss to Patriots, Bears HC Matt Eberflus promises change

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (670 The Score) – Bears head coach Matt Eberflus plans to make changes this week in an effort to spark his struggling team, but he didn’t yet reveal what those will be.

Eberflus continues to consider all options, he said Monday, when he notably didn’t offer a defense of embattled Bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, who’s in danger of losing his play-calling duties. Eberflus’ media session came in the wake of the Bears suffering an ugly 19-3 loss to the Patriots on Sunday at Soldier Field, which marked Chicago’s third straight loss.

"There will be changes, adjustments being made,” Eberflus said. “I'm not going to disclose those right now. I’m not at that point in the process. Monday is a long day in terms of the evaluation of everything, in terms of lineups, in terms of the coaching, in terms of how we need to do better in that coaching and how we need to do better in that communication in game, during the game, after the game, prior to the game. So it’s important that we take time to make those decisions and make the right decisions.”

One change the Bears (4-5) aren’t considering is the demotion of rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, who will remain the team’s starter under center, Eberflus said.

The Bears haven’t scored a touchdown while losing their past two games, and they’ve scored a combined 27 points in the three games since their bye in Week 7.

As of Monday morning, Chicago ranked 24th in the NFL in scoring offense and 30th in total offense.

If Waldron is removed from his role as the Bears’ offensive play-caller, passing game coordinator Thomas Brown would be an option to step into that role. Brown was the Carolina Panthers’ offensive coordinator in 2023.

Waldron was hired by the Bears as their new offensive coordinator back in January. He replaced Luke Getsy, who was fired after two years as Chicago’s offensive coordinator. Brown interviewed for the offensive coordinator opening before Waldron was hired.

While noting he’s in regular conversations with general manager Ryan Poles, Eberflus emphasized the decision on potential changes will be made himself.

"I'm in constant communication with Ryan Poles, as he is with me,” Eberflus said. “So, we'll work together. But it's ultimately my decision."

The Bears will host the Packers (6-3) on Sunday at Soldier Field.
