CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Mayor Lori Lightfoot suggested that if aldermen vote to raise the minimum speed for triggering speed camera tickets she’ll veto the measure.
Right now, going six miles an hour over the speed limit will trigger that ominous camera flash going off and motorists being sent tickets. Many aldermen want to raise that to 10 miles an hour over the limit. But, Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the limit should stay where it is.
“ We’ve got to slow down in the city. We lost 174 people to traffic-related fatalities in 2021 and that number still is increasing yet this year,” Lightfoot said. “It makes no sense for us to be increasing the speeds around parks and schools when we know what the horrific consequences are.”
Mayor Lightfoot said raising the speed cam limit would also cost the city at least $30 million this year, $40 million dollars next year.
The mayor says she will not stand idly by and allow the council to do something she knows will be detrimental to the city.
