CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It has been a long-awaited project for many North Side residents: the demolition of what’s left of General Iron, the metal-shredding company.  An alderman is vowing that the city will not repeat the “mistake” of a Little Village demolition project.

The demolition of the Crawford coal power plant in Little Village in 2020 was a disaster, 2nd Ward Alderman Brian Hopkins said.

It covered the area with toxic dust. Hopkins said that will not happen in Lincoln Park, when the General Iron plant is demolished.

“There will be no explosions, no detonations, no structures will be toppled, like with the smokestack at Crawford," he said.

“This is going to be a methodical disassembly where, piece by piece, the remaining parts of the structure are taken down, carefully put in a truck and hauled away.”

Alderman Hopkins said there will be a public hearing on the demolition plans on November 18.

The demolition project is expected to take a couple of weeks and should start in late November.

Unlike the Little Village project, he said this demolition will be handled by a local company, Heneghan Wrecking.
