(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Executives at Metra are coming out against a railroad merger that involves service on two lines.
The Canadian Pacific Railroad runs trains on Metra's Milwaukee District North and Milwaukee District West lines. CP Rail wants to merge with the Kansas City Southern to create a network that would stretch from Canada to Mexico.
Metra has filed an objection with the Surface Transportation Board, saying the merger would result in more freight train traffic and more delays for Metra passengers. It's asking the government to either scrap the merger or impose conditions that would give Metra power to dispatch trains and the lines.
A Canadian Pacific spokesperson told the Chicago Tribune that both lines have high on-time rates and that the merger wouldn't radically change the number of freight trains on those tracks.
