CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Metra board is considering a plan to streamline its fare structure as a way to boost ridership closer to pre-pandemic levels.
Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said some riders complained that having 10 fare zones was too complicated, so the Metra board is considering a plan to reduce the number of zones to four.
"Our goal was to make this system easier to understand, to encourage riders manship, to simplify onboard fare collection and meet our budget needs…We set all fares under the new structure at or below where they were before the pandemic," Gillis said.
Other ways Metra is considering streamlining its fare structure include discontinuing the promotional $6 and $10 Day Passes, as well as the $100 Super Saver Monthly Pass.
10-Ride Tickets would also be replaced with day passes sold in packs of 5 only on the Ventra app.
Public hearings on the fare plan will be held Nov. 1 and 2, and the Metra board is scheduled to vote on it at its Nov. 10 meeting.
