An anti-gay slur chanted during Sunday’s soccer match between Mexico and Ecuador at Soldier Field brought the game to a brief halt in the 81st minute.

Officials stopped the game for a few minutes after homophobic chants were directed at Ecuador’s goalie, Alexander Dominguez.

Everyone who attended Sunday's game had been warned against such language, which has been an unfortunate tradition among some Mexican soccer fans.

Organizers had displays outside the stadium, sent an email to ticket holders, and used public service announcements to warn attendees against chanting the homophobic slur, but it wasn’t enough to stop the behavior.

The friendly match, which took place ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, ended in a scoreless tie.

Both teams play again on Saturday: Ecuador will play in Fort Lauderdale, Fl., and Mexico will play at home.
