MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- For the first time in its history, Michigan City, Indiana is being led by a Black mayor. She officially started working Tuesday after being sworn in over the weekend.
While she said she’s honored and humbled, Angie Nelson Deutich emphasizes her two terms on the City Council and service on various boards.
"That's what I want people to remember that 'she was the most qualified. She was the most experienced. She has the passion for the city and the people," the mayor said referring to herself.
The Democrat said since defeating incumbent Duane Parry in November, the two haven’t spoken much, but there are "no hard feelings" on her end.
Deutich said she plans to focus on bringing more residents and small businesses to the city with new mixed-use developments.
"How do we draw more business to the area? And part of that is going to be housing. People want newer housing," she explained. "My kids want to live here unless they have all the amenities they're use to while they were in college."
Another way she believes is paid internships that would have college students help modernize aspects of city government.
