CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Rogers Park YMCA is now helping to house migrants who were bused to Chicago from Texas.

In a newsletter to residents, Ald. Debra Silverstein (50th) wrote that the city has started to temporarily house migrants at the High Ridge YMCA building, where they’re being given meals and other basic items by the Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

Silverstein said the High Ridge YMCA is able to accommodate 120 people on a temporary basis.

Most of the arrivals will only stay for a short period of time before moving in with family or friends throughout the Midwest region.

The National Guard is assisting with staffing support at the temporary shelter, Silverstein said.

The majority of those arriving in Chicago are fleeing the humanitarian and economic crisis in Venezuela, Silverstein said, and she added that the entire situation is very fluid.

Silverstein wrote that her office will serve as a dropoff location for any donations. Here’s a rundown of accepted donation items.
