(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A military dad had a special mission last week: make it to an Oak Lawn hospital in time for the birth of his first child.
Cara Rahming said after four years of marriage, she and husband Harold began to talk about family planning.
“We just started thinking about what our future looked like and what our family structure would look like,” Rahming said.
It began to take shape in January, when Rahming found out she was pregnant.
Not long after, they realized Harold Rahming would be serving in Iraq during the birth of his child.
“It was very anxiety provoking,” Rahming said. “Knowing that I was going to miss the birth while being overseas and not being there for my wife during this once in a lifetime opportunity.”
After successfully speeding up the process of returning the states, though, Rahming was able to make it to Advocate Christ Medical Center and surprise his wife — just in time for the birth of their son.
“Being deployed twice, being in the military for 17 years and medical school, none of that training prepared me for that moment,” Rahming said.
