JOLIET, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A 30-year-old Joliet woman is sentenced to serve 35 years in prison for the 2017 murder of her infant daughter.

It was a crime that Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow described as "incomprehensible." Shanquilla Garvey was living at the Bel-Air Motel in Joliet with her eight -month- old daughter, Cherish, and two other kids at the time.

Glasgow said in a statement that Cherish was taken from this earth simply because Garvey wanted her to stop crying.

"This precious baby girl’s last experience was one of trauma and suffering, something no prison sentence can ever undo," he added.

The Joliet Herald News reports during an initial hearing in 2017, Judge Art Smigielski said this baby was beaten, kicked and thrown against the dresser. As a result, Cherish suffered two skull fractures, brain bleeding and liver laceration.

Smigielski ordered Garvey to stay in jail without bond.
