(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — More license plate readers are coming to Chicago-area expressways.
Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly said the 99 automated LPRs installed along the Dan Ryan Expressway have already helped police track down suspects in shootings and other violent crimes.
The plan is to have a total of 300 readers installed along Chicago-area expressways by the end of June.
The readers are solely a crime-fighting tool and cannot be used to catch speeders.
