CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago’s Bureau of Forestry reports that crews have managed to trim more than triple the number of trees this year compared to 2022.

They switched from a complaint- based trimming program to a grid-based system this year. Malcolm Whiteside, the head of the forestry bureau, said it has led to “phenomenal growth.”

He said crews have trimmed more than 34,000 trees this year, compared to 9,300 at the same time last year. The new system allows crews to focus on specific areas rather than respond to 311 complaint calls and driving all over the city answering one at a time.

Under the old system, it could take a year for crews to follow-up on a complaint, the Daily Line reports.
