CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - As the City could begin enforcing limits next week on how long migrants stay in shelters, a new report says the vast majority are not eligible for work permits.
The Chair of the Immigration and Refugee Rights Committee, Ald. Andre Vasquez, tells Axios only about one in ten migrants in City shelters can get work permits.
The federal government says Venezuelans who arrived before August are eligible.
The news site says only about 1,000 new arrivals had permits as of late January, while nearly 4,000 had applied for protected status.
The City census says about 11,700 migrants are currently staying in shelters. Vasquez fears that by the end of next month 5,000 or 6,000 could be without housing or legal work if the Johnson administration doesn’t revise limits at shelters.
The most recent deadline for evictions is March 16.
