CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A man was killed while riding his motorcycle on Chicago’s Southwest Side Sunday night.

Chicago police said the motorcycle rider was headed northbound on Pulaski near 55th Street in the West Elsdon neighborhood when a woman driving a 2002 Chevy SUV hit him while turning left.

It was at about 7:15 p.m.

Paramedics took the man to the hospital where he died. The Cook County Medical Examiner identified him as 46-year-old Antonio Avila Fernandez of Back of the Yards. He lived about three miles from the crash.

Police ticketed the driver.

Next month is Motorcycle Awareness Month. The State says two years ago, motorcycles were about 3% of the registered vehicles in the state but accounted for 11% of traffic deaths.
