(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A new program seems to be stealing away residents from Illinois.

The idea behind the Move to Michigan Program is simple: Prove you work remotely full-time and that you’re willing to move to southwest Michigan.

If approved, you could receive thousands of dollars in incentives.

“Being able to work remotely has truly changed the landscape of how we work,” Christina Frank, vice president of external communications for Cornerstone Alliance, said Tuesday. “We wanted to let people know that Southwest Michigan is a very viable community that has a lot of opportunities.”

Frank said of the first 300 families to apply this year, more than 60 percent were from the Chicago area.

“The workforce has realized, ‘Hey, we can work for these companies from anywhere.’”

With another round of applications likely next year, Frank said the program is already paying off.

“We did an economic impact study that found that this is going to bring over $1.3 million in local spending for our community,” she said. “That’s really what this is all about. Helping our small businesses.”
