MARION COUNTY, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Police in the Indianapolis area are looking for a man who was locked up for murder and was mistakenly released.

The Marion County Sheriff, Kerry Forestal said the man, identified as Kevin Mason, was arrested on September 11. He's wanted for a 2021 murder in Minnesota.

Two days later, he was mistakenly released. Forestal said that the prison staff is short-handed and underpaid.

"That's not an excuse, but it's a fact," he stressed. "I mean we're 25-30 people down in civilians. We're 75 detention deputies and 75 deputies, so people become overworked and make errors."

Forestal said the man's girlfriend picked him up at the jail. She was later arrested for assisting him. Forestal said he waited to go public about the mistake, because he wanted a "tactical advantage."
