(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A long-in-development musical based on the vintage cartoon character Betty Boop is nearing its Chicago premier.

“BOOP! The Betty Boop Musical” will run Nov. 19-Dec. 24 at the CIBC Theatre, 18 W. Monroe St. as a planned runup for a Broadway debut.

Betty Boop is the irrepressible flapper character with a high-pitched voice who led a series of 1930s-era cartoon shorts from Max Fleisher, a competitor of Walt Disney.

Showrunners describe the musical’s plot this way: “Betty's dream of an ordinary day off from the super-celebrity in her black-and-white world leads to an extraordinary adventure of color, music, and love in New York City — one that reminds her and the world, “You are capable of amazing things.”

The show stars Jasmine Amy Rogers as Betty Boop, and the show is directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell of “Kinky Boots,” “Pretty Woman: The Musical,” and “Hairspray” fame. A stage adaptation of the classic cartoon character has been in development since the early-2000s, according to “Playbill” magazine.

Producers this week released rehearsal footage of the production. For more information, click here.
