EVANSTON (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Evanston has installed boxes around the city containing the anti-opioid overdose drug Naloxone.

The city placed the so-called “Emergency Overdose Boxes” in five locations: the Main Library, Robert Crown Community Center, Evanston Ecology Center, Levy Senior Center and Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center.

Each contains two doses of Naloxone, along with instructions.

“While Evanston is not currently facing an opioid epidemic, instances of opioid-related hospitalizations and overdoses exist within the community,” the city said in a statement.

City health officials noted over the past 19 months there have been 174 opioid overdose-related emergency room visits by Evanston residents.
