(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The mayor of Naperville says it's time to lift the indoor mask mandate in Illinois.

Steve Chirico on Friday said COVID infection rates in neighboring states without mask mandates are similar to those of Illinois.

He said he understands the benefits of a mask mandate when the evidence shows it helps slow the spread of the virus.

But he said if that's no longer the case, the mask mandate in Illinois is an unnecessary burden.

His remarks come as Illinois is experiencing a worsening of COVID-19 metrics. The state is now averaging 3,767 daily cases, compared to 2,176 per day in mid-October — a 74% increase.

Gov. JB Pritzker has not committed to a timeline to lift the mask mandate.
