Naperville plans to replace bridge that's more than 40 years old

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Drivers will have a harder time crossing a bridge in the western suburbs.

The Washington Street bridge through downtown Naperville is down to one lane in each direction after a state investigation found increased deterioration in the structure.

The city is preparing to replace the over 40-year-old bridge. One side will be demolished and rebuilt starting next year. The other side will be demolished in 2024.

Naperville had been planning to reduce traffic flow ahead of the reconstruction project, the results of the inspection moved that timeline up.

The bridge has been under weight restrictions since 2016 and has been undergoing monthly inspections since 2019.

For more information about the project, including a map of current lane closures and project updates, visit www.naperville.il.us/dtwashingtonbridge.
