Authorities get to bottom of far north suburbs' natural gas stench

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Winds from the west Tuesday brought dozens of calls about a natural gas odor in the far northern suburbs.

Callers from across McHenry, Lake and Ogle Counties told 911 dispatchers the same thing, they were smelling natural gas outside.

The calls started in the late afternoon and prompted fire departments in North Chicago, Marengo and elsewhere to search for a source.

Nicor Gas said it also investigated and believes the smell came from Iowa, not its system.

The Clinton County Sheriff's Office in Iowa said an investigation found the smell came from maintenance of equipment in Cedar County, west of there.
