(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Members of United Auto Workers walked off the job at the Stellantis Casting Plant in Kokomo, Ind.

Roughly 1,200 workers said the strike was over health and safety issues, including the company’s alleged refusal to replace the plant’s air conditioning and heating systems.

The 3,500-acre plant makes aluminum parts used in the powertrains of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles, and a long-term strike could affect vehicle assembly lines across North America.

In a statement, though, Stellantis said it was committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment for all its employees and hopes to resume negotiations with the striking workers as soon as possible.

Stellantis said production had not been scheduled for this weekend and hopes to resume negotiations with the striking workers as soon as possible.
