(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Nearly 40 exotic animals were surrendered at an event this weekend in southern Wisconsin.

WBBM Newsradio’s Nancy Harty reports it was part of an effort to prevent another Chance the Snapper situation. That’s the alligator that showed up in the Humboldt Park lagoon three years ago.

J and R Aquatic Animal Rescue held the event so that owners don’t end up flushing or releasing their exotic animals.

Director John Moyles tells CBS 58 in Milwaukee a surrender event in Bristol on Saturday netted birds, turtles, lizards and a roughly 8-foot-long python.

The rescue has several animals up for adoption, including a crested gecko; a snapping turtle; two black velvet chincillas; and a 3-foot-long “sassy” snake named Mr. Slithers.
