CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Several new Americans were sworn in Wednesday at the most American of places, a baseball field, as they became the star attraction before the White Sox hosted the Washington Nationals.
“People from so many different countries are represented here, all wanting to citizens of the United States,” noted U.S. District Judge Thomas Durkin. “It’s a wonderful testament to our country and your new country, as of today.”
Durkin swore in 25 new citizens from 17 different countries, including Mexico, Germany, Ireland and Albania. They stood in the sunshine, wearing White Sox caps and waving American flags at Guaranteed Rate Field, on their first day as Americans.
Kershia Johnson is originally from Great Britain. She said Chicago is the best American city, but admitted she still has a few things to learn.
“Everyone is so friendly, and it’s just a melting pot of everybody,” Johnson said. “It’s only when I came to Chicago I felt, ‘This is home.’ I’ve achieved so much, and I definitely understand what it means to live the American dream.”
