(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Another Chicago area hospital system has set up a clinic to treat people who continue to have symptoms long after recovering from COVID-19.

It’s called “long Covid” or long-haulers syndrome,  and a clinic has been set up by Edward-Elmhurst Health to help treat people who have it.

An estimated 10% to 15% of people who recover from COVID still have some lingering symptoms, said Dr. Jonathan Pinsky, medical director of infection control and prevention at Edward Hospital in Naperville.

Some of the most commonly reported symptoms of long-haulers include brain fog, headaches, muscle aches and pains, fatigue, shortness of breath and chest pains.

Dr. Pinsky says people who’ve had mild cases of COVID generally do not get severe cases of long COVID.

“If you still have symptoms within the first four weeks, that could be from the initial infection. You don’t really consider it long COVID until it’s been four weeks after the diagnosis,” he explained.

Dr. Hurmina Muqtadar, a member of the Edward-Elmhurst Health’s Post-COVID Neuro-Care Clinic team, said long Covid can make it difficult for people to function in their personal and professional lives.
