CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation into a shooting in August that left four members of a family dead and a fifth wounded has been completed.
It was about 4 a.m. on August 9th when sheriff’s deputies were called to a home on the 5800 block of Wild Plum Road in unincorporated Crystal Lake on a report of gunshots.
Three women were dead. A fourth was wounded and so was a man.
Police quickly said that Jean Song, 44 was believed to have killed three family members, Lauren Smith-Song, 32, Yuna Song, 49 and Chang Song, 73 and then turned the gun on himself.
The Sheriff’s Office now said it’s been determined that “the incident was a familial domestic situation that escalated from a verbal dispute to physical violence.”
The man shot all four women, killing three, before shooting himself.
He later died in the hospital. The fourth woman survived. The shooter was most likely suffering from a mental health crisis, according to the Sheriff's office.
Police said that the shooter possessed a valid FOID card and Illinois Concealed Carry License.
