(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Wednesday is the day that for the first time, members chosen by voters will join the Chicago Board of Education.
One of the elected members is addressing one of the biggest challenges facing the new board -- a contract for teachers.
Leaders of the Chicago Teachers Union have claimed that the Chicago Public Schools have enough money to meet teacher demands for pay and school services without the need for budget cuts.
Ellen Rosenfeld, who was elected to represent the school board's 4th District on Chicago's North Side, questions that.
“CPS is on the edge of a financial cliff. Looking to the long-term stability of Chicago public schools, we have to prioritize responsible budgets. It's gonna be a lot of work. CPS is deeply in debt.”
Rosenfeld says she's hopeful that the school board's elected and appointed members can find ways to address the financial challenges facing CPS and meet the needs of students, teachers and the community.
Ten members of the school board are elected, while Mayor Brandon Johnson gets to select 11 members.
